History and Overview of Korean Folk Village

Opened in 1974, the "한국민속촌" spans over a vast area of approximately 260,000 pyeong (about 860,000 square meters). It recreates a traditional Joseon-era village, complete with over 30 traditional "한옥" (hanok, Korean traditional houses), public buildings, a marketplace, and rural homes, giving visitors an opportunity to experience Korea’s historical lifestyle. The village, meticulously designed to reflect even the smallest details of daily life during the Joseon period, has also been a popular filming location for historical dramas, making it a perfect place to learn about and engage with Korea’s traditional customs.

Traditional Korean Experiences

One of the highlights of the "한국민속촌" is its wide variety of interactive programs. Beyond simply touring the grounds, visitors can actively participate in hands-on experiences that deepen their connection to Korea's past.

Traditional Costumes and Performances

Visitors can dress in period costumes and walk around the village, truly immersing themselves in the cultural atmosphere. A selection of traditional attire, ranging from noblemen and scholars to commoners, is available for all to try.

Additionally, visitors can take part in traditional crafts, learn about ancient Korean lifestyles, and enjoy performances featuring traditional instruments, dances, and other cultural displays that happen throughout the village.

Tips for Visiting Korean Folk Village

Getting There

Although the village is about an hour away from Seoul, transportation is convenient. Direct buses run from major locations like Incheon Airport, Seoul Station, and Gangnam, making it easy for both local and international travelers. Given the size and variety of activities available, plan to spend at least half a day here. Arriving by 10 a.m. is recommended so you can enjoy the performances and activities without feeling rushed.

Ticket Discounts

Be sure to check the "한국민속촌"’s official website for monthly promotions and discounts on tickets. You can often find deals that help reduce the cost of admission.

Weekday vs. Weekend Visits

While weekdays offer a quieter, more relaxed experience, weekends provide more performances and activities. The park also stays open later on weekends, offering extended hours to explore.

One major reason to visit on the weekend is the "연분" (Yeonbun) performance, a highlight of the "한국민속촌".

The “Yeonbun” Performance

The most popular event at the village is the "연분" show, which starts at 8 p.m. on weekends. It’s a breathtaking performance combining traditional Korean music, dance, and media art to tell the story of a fateful romance in the Joseon era. Seats fill up quickly, with some guests arriving two hours early. If you plan to attend, consider bringing snacks to enjoy while you wait for the show to start.

➤ The "한국민속촌" offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to dive into Korea’s rich history and culture. Whether you’re interested in historical architecture, traditional crafts, or live performances, this cultural theme park provides an immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
